Night Vision Workshop Wednesday 22nd of September, 2004

EB: As part of the preliminary research for the Installation stage of The Stairwell Project, I decided to create a situation for the children, in which I would be able to have an insight into the way they think. The Night Vision Workshop was set up in order for me to understand how the children reacted, created and thought with the materials, mediums and situations that I use in my own work.

I set up a dark room which was only lit by UV lights and spread unlimited paper on the floor and walls. The children were left to create images and shapes by using fluorescent paints. Their initial reaction to the set up of the space was a mix of excitement, curiosity and fascination.

As an artist, these observations were very important to me. They revealed a lot about what makes children excited and positive, and how there is a way of broadening the horizons of play and creativity and also joining the two worlds together.

Below are some images of the children's work, exposed under UV light.
